ADHD and Subscriptions: A 15-Minute Audit

Subscriptions are designed to be forgotten. A 15-minute audit finds the ones you’re paying for and don’t use, plus a simple system to stop new ones sneaking in.

The short version

  • Subscriptions renew quietly, which makes them a classic ADHD tax.
  • A 15-minute audit of statements and your phone finds most of them.
  • Keep one list with renewal dates and use one card for all subscriptions.

Subscriptions are built to be forgotten: small amounts, automatic renewals, no envelope in the mail. For ADHD brains that work on “out of sight, out of mind,” they’re an easy leak.

The 15-minute audit

  1. Check your phone. On iPhone and Android you can see app subscriptions in your account settings.
  2. Search your email for “receipt,” “renewal” and “subscription.”
  3. Scan two months of card statements for recurring charges.
  4. Write each one down with its cost, how often it bills and when it renews.
  5. Mark each: Keep, Cancel or Review.

The 30-day rule

If you haven’t used it in 30 days, it’s a candidate to cancel. You can almost always rejoin later.

Stop new ones sneaking in

  • One card for all subscriptions, so they’re easy to spot.
  • One list with renewal dates, reviewed monthly.
  • Free trials: cancel right after signing up (many keep running until the end date), or set an alert three days before it ends.
  • Turn off auto-renew on annual plans and decide when the reminder comes.

Canceling one $15 subscription you don’t use saves $186 a year.
